Gozorelajandancia-Ricorelajosura is a musical piece originally written for bassoon, but it was premiered in 2017 at the Havana Clarinet Festival, performed by Flavia Méndez on Bb clarinet.
The title of the piece comes from a monologue by the great Alexis Valdés, known for his ability to mix humor and poetry in his performances. The piece features a danzón as the main theme, but unlike traditional danzón, this composition stands out for its unconventional structure and improvisational style.
Towards the end of the piece, a montuno is introduced, intertwining segments of wajeos and solos, providing a dynamic and vibrant closure. The montuno, with its repetitive and rhythmic base, allows the performers to showcase their virtuosity.
In the audio version of the 2017 premiere, a clave can be heard, a rhythmic element essential in many genres of Cuban music. This inclusion of the clave is optional, allowing any performer to decide whether to integrate it into their performance, adding an extra layer of flexibility and personalization to the piece.

Mama Kalunga This piece, written for solo French horn and premiered in 2023 by Cuban hornist Arlet Tabares at the Annual Graduate Conference of Georgia State University, captures the contrasting nature of the sea, reflecting its serene clarity when calm and the chaos it can unleash when furious.
The fast section is inspired by a specific groove known as Chachalokafun. Typically played during religious ceremonies on the batá, an African percussion instrument integral to Cuban culture, this groove features a set of three drums of varying sizes. The 5/8 accents are displaced every few measures, creating an opportunity to experiment with cadence and tempo, giving the impression of a composed improvisation.

“Viaducto” is a beautiful danzón dedicated to the city of Matanzas, originally written for big band in 2012. This danzón was premiered during the JoJazz competition that same year, where it won first place in the composition category. Lead sheet available.
